How did you start your business, and what was your inspiration?
After attending Syracuse University and working as an Inside Sales Representative for the Oklahoma City Thunder, I moved back home to Vermont and became the Marketing and Promotions Manager for the Vermont Lake Monsters. I had dabbled in graphic design before, but wanted to improve my skills for this new role. I spent hours and hours of my free time watching Photoshop tutorials on YouTube and recreating Celtics and Red Sox graphics. I loved it, and it quickly became my favorite part of the job. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we missed out on the 2020 MiLB season. To pass the time, I reached out to local organizations and offered graphic design services. That was the beginning of Jeff Kent Design, which became my full-time job in June of 2024.
What's your favorite part about what you do and why?
I love being able to work with a number of different people and brands, it keeps each day unique and interesting. Whether I'm creating print advertising for Leonardo's Pizza, a new race bib for the Vermont City Marathon, or a billboard for the Kane County Cougars (MiLB), I always look forward to working with my clients to create something that will help drive revenue while maintining their brand identity.
Describe a recent project, client success story, or achievement that you're especially proud of.
As a self-taught graphic designer and website developer, there are a lot of "firsts" that I've had to overcome in real time. I worked with The Malley Group @ KW Vermont to build a website for a new development project, Haystack Crossing, in Hinesburg. I had built a number of websites for clients at this point, but they wanted to include an interactive map that showed lot pricing and acreage when hovered over. I didn't have any experience with interactive maps, but through extensive research, some basic coding, and a lot of trial and error, I was able to get the map up and running well before their website launch date.
What should potential clients know before hiring someone in your field?
When building a house, you need a carpenter, plumber, electrician, roofers, etc. Marketing is similar in that graphic design is just a piece of the puzzle. Sure, I have some experience in email marketing, social media, and video editing - and I would be happy to offer my opinion. That said, there are experts in each of those fields who are better suited for those things (hence Freelance Vermont!)
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your business, your process, or how people can work with you?
I've worked with a number of businesses across many industries, including sports teams, financial institutions, restaurants, tourism agencies, hotels, realtors, and more. Many of my clients have established brands, and just need an extra hand with their day-to-day deign needs.
